Scientology in Clearwater
Welcome to this special edition of Freedom in Clearwater, in which we commemorate the events of the 75th Anniversary of the Fort Harrison Hotel, downtown’s best known landmark.
It was our honor to have been joined by so many distinguished guests and neighbors on the occasion of the Fort Harrison’s anniversary gala in January 2002, and it has been our continuing pleasure to host so many thousands more from the community at subsequent open houses and brunches.
The celebrations and events for this fine historical hotel have been as much a salute to the spirit of the community as a whole, for the Fort Harrison has long stood as a monument to what makes our city so loved—its hospitality, beautiful surroundings and a tradition of gracious living.
As long-time residents can best appreciate, the Fort Harrison is not just a splendid example of traditional Southern Florida architecture. To generations of Clearwater citizens and visitors from every corner of the world, the Fort Harrison has been more like a close friend, a neighbor known and loved by all, with a rich character and life all of its own. Its walls and grounds harbor fond memories of cotillions, high school proms, dinner parties and performances gone by.
Since 1975, the Church of Scientology has been the proud caretaker of this most famous of Clearwater’s citizens, and has seen to the complete restoration of the hotel to its original splendor and beyond, from its lobby and restaurants, to well-maintained grounds and the stunning Crystal Ballroom.
So today the creation of fond memories continues, as the building again hosts social functions marking those important events and new milestones in the lives of area residents.
Our doors are open to you, and we will continue to hold open houses and brunches and to make our own facilities available for your special events. Come visit the “Images of a Lifetime” photographic exhibit which chronicles the life of Scientology founder, L. Ron Hubbard. Located in the Crystal Ballroom, the exhibit has become one of the popular elements of the tour.
Many have thanked us for sharing the Fort Harrison with them. In return, we would like to say thank you to the community and all those we’ve had the opportunity to meet. It is our pleasure to work with others in the community to preserve Clearwater’s heritage and beauty, while improving all aspects of our city and the quality of life for all.
Tours of the hotel are also available by appointment by contacting my office at (727) 467-6860.
We look forward to seeing you here. And bring a friend.
