Narconon Montreal: Results that Save Lives

“This is the longest I’ve been clean in the last eight years and I haven’t had one urge to go out and use.”

Graduates of the Narconon drug rehabilitation program
Word of results from graduates of the Narconon drug rehabilitation program has resulted in Narconon Montreal experiencing its greatest ever demand, requiring it move to new facilities in Trois Rivieres (bottom image).

T
hese words from a recent graduate of Narconon Montreal is representative of what scores of graduates have reported about their Narconon experience. The word is spreading further than ever before, and today the drug rehabilitation centre is experiencing the most demand for its program since it opened in 1997.

As a result, Narconon Montreal just moved to new, spacious facilities in November 2001, located outside Trois Rivieres, 100 kms east of Montreal. The new 10-acre, seven-building complex, with 130 beds, makes the Narconon one of the largest residential drug rehabilitation facilities in Canada.

“After five years in our old location, we were becoming strained with the demand for services. We needed to find the ideal site to expand. We now have this,” said Tony Putorti, executive director of Narconon Montreal.

At a time when a growing number of drug programs are resorting to such means as drug substitution (e.g. methadone for heroin) and “clean needle” exchanges—trying to halt the ramifications of drug addiction after giving up on its causes—Narconon is emerging as the preeminent program in actually handling addiction.

The reason, said Putorti, is simple. “Narconon gets results, and has been for three and a half decades. That is being recognized.”

Narconon’s success rate, as demonstrated through official studies conducted in Sweden and Spain, is more than 70 percent for those who complete the program. Narconon has grown to 106 centres in 31 countries today almost entirely through word of mouth from its results.

The program uses exclusively the drug rehabilitation methods developed by L. Ron Hubbard. While perhaps best known as a popular author and the founder of the Scientology religion, Mr. Hubbard is also widely recognized for his humanitarian endeavors which resulted in secular methods to handle drug addiction, crime, illiteracy and immorality that are used by individuals of all creeds. Groups and programs which use Mr. Hubbard’s discoveries to address these ills exist by the hundreds throughout the world.

“We have been in our new facility for only one month now and we have already doubled the number of lives we are saving from drugs. We expect to have tripled by the end of next month. We are already looking into buying a nearby 140 bed facility.”

With 17 staff, and three who just recently returned from training at Narconon Arrowhead, the international Narconon rehabilitation and training facility in the U.S. (see the following story), Narconon Montreal is doing just that—saving lives.

One student on the program said he had been in 14 other programs before finding Narconon, where he finally ended his substance abuse problem. He found that the detoxification step of the Narconon program “is really a detox, not just a withdrawal. It actually cleans drugs out of the body.”

The program changed his life. “I’ve learned to be in touch with others. At Narconon, they did not just tell me what’s wrong, like [tell me] it’s my parents or something,” he said. “And I wasn’t able to talk to people easily like I’m doing now.”

One Narconon student went through another program three times with no results before coming to Narconon. From doing the program he found that, “I’m happier—a lot happier. I talk a lot more. I focus and concentrate while I’m talking to people. This is the longest I’ve been clean in the last eight years and I haven’t had one urge to go out and use.”
